Colchester Night Shelter took the difficult decision to temporarily close on 30th March 2020.  We would like to thank all of you for your support during this difficult time. It was not an easy decision to make, but was the only sensible one to ensure the safety of all the people the Night Shelter is responsible for.  Below we have compiled some of the important questions that you may want to ask.

Where have your residents gone?

The shelter did not close before finding alternatives for the residents.  We worked closely with Colchester Borough Council and they are currently housed somewhere safe. The government issued a mandate to house all homeless people in March due to the coronavirus outbreak, so all homeless people should be housed by the council at the moment.

When will you reopen?

The shelter is a group of victorian terraced houses with small rooms.  The layout makes it impossible to keep residents or staff socially distanced and safe at the moment, but as soon as this changes we will issue an update.

I am homeless or I know someone who is.  Who do I call?

If you know of someone who is street homeless you can report them to StreetLink.

If you find yourself homeless please call the Colchester Borough Homes out of hours line on 01206 769779

Beacon House is also providing a limited day centre service.

Can you afford to stay closed?

This is where the shelter really needs your help!  The Night Shelter has been providing help to the homeless for 35 years and this is the first time it has ever been closed.  Every resident’s stay is paid for from housing benefit and we are dependent on this regular income to keep going.  Your support is vital to ensure that the homeless in Colchester can continue to use its services in the future.

Can I Volunteer or Donate Items?

We are not taking on any new volunteers at the moment but if you would like to help us once we reopen, you can apply by completing an application form here.  Volunteers come to the shelter in the evenings and help to prepare and serve the dinner.

We are currently only taking monetary donations, for which we are very grateful.  We are also politely asking that you do not leave donations outside the building as this could become a health and safety issue for us and our neighbours.

If you have any other questions, you can contact us via our facebook page or email enquiries@colchesternightshelter.org.uk.  Please note that there is only limited office cover at the moment so there may be a delay before getting a response.
